BIO
Josh Karas is an exciting up and coming pianist and composer based in Nashville, TN. Years of experience in classical training, jazz studies, and cover band performance have prepared Karas for any musical situation. In May 2022, Karas became the first student to graduate from Vanderbilt's award-winning jazz program with a Bachelor in Jazz Studies and a minor in Business. At Vanderbilt, he studied with Bruce Dudley (jazz piano), Ryan Middagh (composition), and Amy Dorfman (classical piano). During his undergraduate career, Karas received five Downbeat Student Music Awards as a member of the Blair Big Band and top jazz combo directed by Jeff Coffin. In 2021, Karas was one of six young composers selected to have their pieces performed as a part of the 2022 Jazz Education Network Young Composer's Showcase. Since graduating, Karas has exploded onto the Nashville music scene, playing and recording with Natasha Blaine, The 12South Band, The Sofia Goodman Group, Don Aliquo, Alex Hodge, Abigail Flowers, The Dream Catchers, and many more. Additionally, Karas regularly performs his original music as a bandleader to sold out audiences at venues such as Rudy's Jazz Room, The 5 Spot, Wilburn Street Tavern.
In addition to performing, Karas is a dedicated teacher. Over the past seven years he has taught dozens of students from a variety of skill levels, ages, and musical backgrounds. Karas aims to foster a love for music in his lessons, always paying attention to what music resonates with the student. Karas' diverse musical background makes him an excellent teacher for students who want to explore the world of popular music while still staying grounded in the fundamentals that classical music can provide.
